Municipal volunteers in Connecticut are trying to figure out how to get rid of the asbestos in government buildings after the community voted down a million dollar plan for the removal. The City Hall building in Torrington, Connecticut is coming undone at the seams. Between the flaking paint, the faulty boiler room and the rusted fire escapes, it would seem that the building poses no threat except falling down. But city officials say that that the worst problem is the exposed asbestos, which they cannot remove due to lack of funding. In January, town officials tried to get a million dollar plan voted in so that repairs and abatement could start. Since that vote was turned down by the city, volunteers are trying to find the money to get rid of the dangerous substance. The exposed asbestos can lead to many types of deadly respiratory diseases, including mesothelioma and emphysema. Mesothelioma is a result of asbestos fibers being stuck to the lining of the lungs, which keeps the tissue from absorbing oxygen. Asbestos is not dangerous unless disturbed, making the removal of the material hazardous. Abatement, or the safe removal of asbestos, should only be conducted by a licensed professional, and can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to do correctly and safely.
