A French aircraft carrier that had been decommissioned is due back in France within two weeks. The asbestos-laden ship was turned back to its native land while en route to India after concerns arose to the health threat it posed. The Clemenceau is expected back in the harbor of Brest during the week of May 15th; it has been anchored off the coast of Mauritania for the past few months while its future was mapped.
After 36 years of service to the French Navy, the chip was decommissioned in 1997. It had been ordered back from Indian waters by French President Chirac when a high court had blocked the transfer of the ship to an Indian shipyard. Public and international outcries began over pollution fears, due to the Third World status of the receiving country. It was feared that the shipyard was not properly trained or outfitted to handle hazardous asbestos contained on the ship. The ship may stay in Brest for years while studies are conducted ahead of its demolition.
