After asbestos was found at the Carver Elementary School in Virginia, teachers and parent were both concerned about possible exposure. A meeting was held this week to dispel any concerns about the work being done.

Asbestos, which was used as a form of insulation and fire retardant in many older buildings, does not pose a threat when it is left alone. When renovations are being done to a building and the material is disturbed, however, the fibers can be disturbed and become airborne. Airborne asbestos can be breathed into the lungs, resulting in respiratory illnesses including emphysema and mesothelioma, a type of aggressive lung cancer. Mesothelioma develops after asbestos particles lodge in the lining of the lungs, keeping them from absorbing oxygen. A licensed professional conducted the abatement, or removal, of the asbestos, and recent tests have shown there is no danger in the building.
