Nursing Home Employee Fired Over Asbestos

A former worker of the Pleasant Acres Nursing Home in York County says that he was fired from his position after speaking out about the presence of asbestos in the building.

A contractor hired to replace floor tiles in the Pleasant Acres Nursing and Retirement Home in York County said that he was fired from his company after he spoke out about the asbestos present in the tiles. He had repeatedly asked that the flooring be tested by his employer, and to be provided with safety gear while working on the site. Neither was done, and the man eventually supplied an independent laboratory with samples to find out if they were made of asbestos. The tests came back indicating hazardous levels of asbestos; he again asked for safety gear and was told to wear a surgical mask.

Only licensed professionals should conduct work on materials containing high levels of asbestos. While removing and replacing the tiles, the contractor inadvertently exposed the nursing home patients to toxic levels of asbestos fibers, which can lead to respiratory illnesses. Emphysema, asbestosis and mesothelioma can all result from asbestos exposure, and each can be deadly. Mesothelioma, a form of aggressive lung cancer, can take years or decades to be diagnosed. The contractor is in the middle of a lawsuit against his former employer and union over the mishandling of the deadly material.
