Illegal Dump Site Causing Health Concern

An illegal dump site in Connecticut is posing a huge health threat as items left there are becoming more hazardous. What used to house old tires and broken furniture now is a place to dump deadly asbestos. The illegal dumpsite behind Bulkley High School in Hartford, Connecticut is just one of an estimated 40 such sites within the city. But what started off as a place that people left broken chairs and rusted out grills is quickly becoming a health concern as bodies of farm animals and even deadly asbestos is being dumped. The headless animals, consisting mostly of chickens and goats, may smell bad as they decay, but the asbestos is more of a danger as it breaks down. Asbestos needs to be sealed and stored when it is being disposed of, since the material can become deadly if mishandled. Asbestos flakes apart, becoming airborne, when it decays and can be inhaled by the public in such an exposed place. Breathing in asbestos fibers can lead to respiratory diseases, including emphysema and mesothelioma, a deadly type of lung cancer. Mesothelioma can develop over a period of decades, and is usually terminal at the time of detection. The city is attempting to sketch out a plan to remove the asbestos, although the funds needed for such extensive work is going to be hard to come by.
