Leominster City Council in Massachusetts is waiting for word about asbestos that was found at an industrial site by city officials weeks ago. The asbestos pieces have forced a delay in the work that can be done until the material has been cleared.
An industrial site near Nashua River yielded pieces of asbestos, causing city officials to halt work on the site. Work cannot resume until the City Council gives the green light, a move that they are not willing to make until they have been given an update stating the site has been cleared. The area affected shares boundaries with a protected wetland, where work was seen going on. Inspectors went to the site after activity was reported and asbestos has been detected.
Though no hazardous conditions were detected, transite pipe was found on the site, which does contain asbestos. An update was requested, but was denied until a formal vote could be taken of the full council. In the interim, the EPA has been called to supervise the site while updates are given and a formal vote is taken. More tests are scheduled for the area, a main reason the case has been set on hold.
