A New York contractor was found guilty this week of improperly disposing of and mishandling asbestos. The contractor was overseeing work being done to the former Agway building near Syracuse.

A lawsuit against a contractor hired to oversee work being done at the former Agway Building in New York concluded this week with the man being found guilty. His charges include violating the Clear Water Act, the Clean Air Act and the Superfund law. The man instructed his workers to illegally remove and dispose of asbestos found in the building, putting the public at risk many times over for almost six months. The contractor allowed asbestos to drain into the sewers, contaminate construction debris and sit, unsealed, outside the site for long periods of time.

The man could face five years in prison and a fine of $250,000 since he exposed the public to deadly asbestos particles. Asbestos is not dangerous unless mishandled, when it can break apart and become airborne. Airborne asbestos particles can be inhaled, resulting in emphysema and mesothelioma, a type of deadly lung cancer. Mesothelioma often times is not diagnosed until the victim is terminal, and is usually too far advanced for treatment even if caught early.
