A military base in New Mexico is testing all base housing in one development for asbestos. The substance was found in two unoccupied homes, and further testing will reveal if the presence is widespread. About 30 houses on Cannon Air Force Base are being tested for asbestos after the hazardous material was found in a couple of unoccupied homes. Continued air tests are being conducted after the substance was found in low, safe levels among one development consisting of about 30 homes. Though all preliminary tests have shown the levels present to be safe, the base is recommending that homeowners not do anything within their homes that could disturb asbestos until additional test results come back in June. For the next three months, homeowners on base should not hammer on walls or ceilings, and should not nail or drill anything into walls. Though asbestos is usually a safe material, it can become deadly if disturbed. The substance has a tendency to break apart into airborne particles when it is moved or disturbed. The particles can be inhaled and result in respiratory diseases including emphysema and mesothelioma. Mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer, results from the particles blocking the tissue of the lungs from absorbing oxygen, and can take years to fully develop.
