After much debate, a plan to remove asbestos from Marco Island was passed on Monday night. The plan would contract Quality Enterprises to remove the asbestos according to a regiment approved by the EPA. Residents near the future Elkcam Circle Park can breath a little easier this week after a plan to remove asbestos from the site was approved. Asbestos was found on the vacant lot after road construction materials and tools were stored there when the local road was being enlarged and repaved. The Environmental Protection Agency stated that they would remove the hazardous material, but they could not provide a time line for completion any time soon. Quality stepped in and said they would follow the plan outlined by the EPA, and begin removal immediately. The asbestos posed a public health threat, considering that the substance was exposed and beginning to deteriorate. As asbestos breaks down, it can become airborne and can be breathed into the lungs. Asbestos exposure can lead to emphysema and mesothelioma, a type of aggressive lung cancer. Mesothelioma can develop over years, and is usually terminal at the time of detection. Though some say the contract will cost the city too much, others said they just want the asbestos gone.
