Searches for human remains around Ground Zero in New York City were delayed when dust on the building tested positive for asbestos. The area is part of a continuing clean up process.
The grizzly work of searching for human remains on the roof of an empty building near Ground Zero was suspended by officials this week. The area near the World Trade Center had tested positive for asbestos, causing the delay. The former Deutsche Bank Building has revealed nearly 600 bone fragments and other human remains as workers began to clean the area to ready it for demolition. When a dust was found in part of the work area, test were conducted, and returned positive for asbestos.
The EPA suspended the search for more human remains as follow up tests were performed by the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, which owns the building. Results showed that some of the dust particles still contained asbestos, leading to a re-cleaning plan being worked up by the EPA and LMDC. Other work at the site will continue while the abatement is planned and carried out, while the roof will be closed to all but abatement personnel.
