What should have been a simple plan to build a new town hall in a small New Jersey town has turned into a slander festival, where allegations of mishandling asbestos has come to light. Hammonton is normally a peaceful town in New Jersey that wanted nothing more than to get a new town hall building. The focus of talks for over seven years, plans were finally left behind and action was taken in 2006 to move the old town hall building, and start construction on the new one. But the town mayor, who is not well liked in all circles, is now being accused of giving the contracts for the work to family members and friends. The main concern is that the mayor’s cousin, who is not licensed to conduct abatement, removed asbestos from the 100-year old town hall building. The contractor admits that he is not licensed to do the work, but also states that asbestos was not present when he inspected the site prior to beginning renovations. The contractor and the mayor are alleging that the asbestos was planted at the site in order to get them in trouble with the EPA. Removing asbestos can result in a public health threat, since fibers of the material can become airborne. Breathing in asbestos can lead to emphysema and mesothelioma, a deadly form of lung cancer.
