Elementary schools in New Jersey are having asbestos removed after the material was found during construction. Though officials say the removal is safe, some parents are concerned about exposure to the students. Two schools in East Brunswick, NJ are undergoing asbestos abatement after the hazardous substance was found during construction. Though the abatement, or removal, is being conducted during hours where students are not present, parents and staff are still concerned about exposure. It is also becoming difficult for school officials to coordinate the abatement with construction being done to expand the two elementary schools. The possibility of having to remove asbestos while students are in class, although sealing off the areas being worked on, has been suggested. The presence of asbestos does not pose a problem in itself; asbestos becomes dangerous only when it is disturbed. But removing asbestos can create a deadly dust that can be inhaled. Asbestos fibers become caught in the lungs, and can result in emphysema and mesothelioma, an aggressive form of lung cancer. Mesothelioma normally occurs as a result of repeated exposure, but can takes years to manifest and is often deadly when diagnosed. The two schools are trying to continue the abatement after hours to avoid any further concern over the work
