Hazmat crews were required behind a Connecticut high school today after bags of asbestos were found dumped along the road. The bags appeared to be from a commercial construction site.
Bulkley High School was sealed today, not due to any violence, but due to asbestos that was dumped just behind the school. Twelve bags of the deadly material were found, along with gallons of car oil, along a road behind the high school. Some of the bags appeared to have torn when they were being thrown along the public road, causing authorities to seal the school off until the hazardous substance could be contained and removed.
Asbestos is normally a safe material, found in insulation, fire retardants and break pads to name a few everyday items. Asbestos only becomes a danger when it is disturbed and breaks into airborne particles. The asbestos fibers can be breathed into the lungs, where they become stuck. The lungs cannot absorb oxygen, and the tissue begins to die. This can lead to asbestosis, emphysema and mesothelioma, a form of aggressive cancer. Though mesothelioma can take years to develop, authorities stated that the asbestos was contained before any damage was done.
