A Salinas court house is now ordering more independent air tests for levels of asbestos. The monitoring may result in the indefinite closure of the building after employees expressed concern over the hazardous material.

Court house employees in Salinas, CA have gone to their Union, resulting in the Monterey County Superior Court to order more independent air monitoring to determine if airborne asbestos in the north wing of the building have gone up. More than 20 undisclosed sites will be tested in the court house, and results will be rushed back before Thursday morning to accommodate closing the building prior to business if necessary. A certified asbestos consultant was tapped for the testing, and has not only had no involvement with the project, but is from out of the area.

Union and staff requested that independent testing be completed for air quality. The renovations and asbestos abatement have been halted while officials are deciding whether or not to move the courthouse functions to another building. The process was started to add four more court rooms to the building, and was halted after slightly elevated levels of asbestos were detected in the air. After the levels were detected, inmates were moved to holding cells in a separate part of the building.
