A jury verdict was passed this week in a case against General Motor and Ford Motor companies. The decision in the asbestos case will entitle victims of asbestos exposure to an estimated $2 million. An automotive worker’s family in Rhode Island is entitled to a $2 million payout from Ford Motor Company and General Motor Corporation this week after a jury decided the two car companies were responsible for his death. The man had contracted mesothelioma, a form of deadly lung cancer, while working as an automotive repairman for more than 35 years. Working with the insulation and breaks pads on cars has put him in danger of inhaling asbestos fibers, which can lead to other respiratory diseases as well. The mechanic was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2005, and was dead just a few months later. Mesothelioma can lay dormant for years or decades, but is often terminal once is has been diagnosed. Asbestos fibers become caught in the lining of the lungs, which keeps them from absorbing oxygen. It was stated in the case that both companies knew the dangers of asbestos, but had still put the mechanic in danger.
