Work Site May Contain Asbestos

The Department of Environmental Protection has ordered that work on a Lock Drive work site halt until tests can show if the site contains asbestos. Environmental tests are expected back later this week.

The land owner bought the property from her husband’s business partner. Both the land owner and her husband deny dumping any hazardous material on the land, but pieces of what look to be pulverized transite pipe can be found on the land. The pipe is partially made of asbestos, a material that can cause cancer and respiratory diseases. The area has often been used as a dumping ground over the last two decades, and the couple say they have spent more than $40,000 in cleaning the area prior to planned construction.

Tests were ordered by city officials to see if the material was in fact asbestos, and if so how much of the deadly material is on site. Developers were already served with a cease-and-desist order due to filing a flood plan without obtaining a permit, and were ordered to continue the halt until tests results for asbestos came back. The permit issue was being investigated when the asbestos concern arose. The area backs up to the Nashua River, and is considered a sensitive site.
