Asbestos Removal Stirs Concerns

The removal of tons of asbestos from Marco Island is under scrutiny this week as parties argue the pros and cons. Contractors and city officials are hopeful about the plan, but safety committees are asking questions. The asbestos in a future park and landfill on Marco Island has been under debate since it was found last year. The lot was used as a storage area for industrial equipment when asbestos fell off the items and disbursed along the ground. Left over equipment was hauled to a local landfill before the deadly material was discovered, making the area affected even larger. City officials were hoping that a private contractor could complete abatement, or the safe removal of asbestos, instead of having to wait for the Environmental Protection Agency to fund the cleanup. Initial contact with the EPA, city officials and the contractor all seemed promising until a political action committee heard about the plan. The committee indicated that using anyone besides the EPA for the abatement could lead to further problems, and would most likely cost more to the city. The city states that the EPA could take years to clean up the asbestos, increasing the chance of asbestos exposure to the public. Breathing in asbestos fibers can lead to respiratory illnesses, including emphysema and mesothelioma, a form of deadly lung cancer
