The paradise that is Marco Island, Florida has been trying to deal with a pesky asbestos problem over the last few years. Though negotiating with the EPA, the city is also hearing bids from private contractors to remove the material. Marco Island has been trying to come to negotiations with the Environmental Protection Agency for the removal of tons of asbestos from a park and local landfill. The asbestos was left over when the city allowed industrial material to be stored on the future park site. While negotiations are moving slowly with the EPA, the city has decided to submit a contract with a private contractor licensed to remove the hazardous substance. Though the work would be costly, the main concern is the logistics of approval for the project by a non-government agency. The asbestos at the park site, and in a local landfill near the area, is becoming more of a concern as the material begins to break down and particles become airborne. Breathing in asbestos can lead to respiratory illnesses, such as asbestosis, emphysema and mesothelioma, an aggressive type of lung cancer. Residents have not come forward with any symptoms of the diseases, but mesothelioma and emphysema can take year to develop.
