A school district in Maine has decided to conduct a massive asbestos cleanup for all schools within the district. The renovations will be conducted this summer, and are estimated to cost about $7 million.
Required maintenance and safety updates are going to be just a small part of the East Maine Elementary School District renovation project starting this summer. The main portion of the work will involve asbestos cleanup in all affected schools within the district, which will cost almost $7 million. The plan was called for after asbestos was found in Apollo Elementary School this year. The discovery was made when a contractor was employed to patch what appeared to be concrete panels at the top of the building. When the contractor declared it was asbestos, other schools were investigated and asbestos was found in the majority of the buildings.
Though asbestos poses no health threats when it is left alone, it can become deadly if it is disturbed in any way. When asbestos is disturbed, it crumbles and can become airborne, allowing people to breathe fibers of the substance into their lungs. Asbestos exposure can lead to mesothelioma, emphysema and asbestosis. Mesothelioma is often deadly when it is diagnosed, since the disease can take years to develop.
