A cancer sufferer has vowed to raise money for those suffering from mesothelioma, a disease he himself suffers from. The cancer is a result of asbestos exposure, and is often not detected until the infection is terminal.
Though Arthur Tiffin suffers from mesothelioma, he has giving on the mind. The father of two from Walbottle, Newcastle has thrown himself into raising funds for others suffering from the lung cancer. Most of the funds he receives he turns over to the Chronicle’s campaign to shelve Alimta, a life extending drug for those with the lung disease. As more people come forward with the terminal cancer, Mr. Tiffin lobbies companies and organizes fundraisers to raise money for the drug. For the times when Tiffin has to travel to London for chemotherapy, his best friend, Billy Patterson, steps in to carry out work needing attention.
As a boiler engineer in the 1970s, Tiffin was repeatedly exposed to asbestos, prime conditions for contracting mesothelioma. The disease is a cancer of the lung lining, and occurs when asbestos fibers are breathed into the lungs. The company that Tiffin worked for has promised a substantial donation to the fund Tiffin works with, the Mick Knighton Research Fund. The fund was established by Knighton’s widow after he died as a result of mesothelioma; he was exposed to asbestos while working for the Royal Navy.Article Added April 17th, 2006 - Print This Story - Bookmark This Story
