Virginia school officials are trying to settle fears that removing asbestos while school is in session is dangerous. One school says it will take every precaution to assure the safety of students and teachers. State and federal guidelines will be strictly followed when Carver Elementary School undergoes asbestos abatement, or removal, in March. That is what the school system is telling the community amid concerns that working with the asbestos during operating hours may pose a health threat to students and faculty. While abatement is best when performed on vacant buildings, a licensed professional can also safely complete it by sealing off the area being worked on while other parts of the building are occupied. The concern is valid, considering that asbestos exposure can lead to respiratory illnesses. Emphysema, asbestosis and mesothelioma, a form of deadly lung cancer, can all be attributed to inhaling asbestos fibers. Mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases can take years to manifest, and are often times fatal when it is diagnosed. When mishandled, asbestos can break into these fibers, although professionals trained with the substance can prevent this from occurring. School officials will be holding informational meetings to discuss the project.
