Workers from the devastation of 9/11 are now experiencing the aftermath of the wreckage. Those how assisted in the recovery and clean up of the damaged sites are sick; exposure to asbestos has left them wanting answers.
Some of those who helped on 9/11 by dashing into dust filled buildings are now in need themselves. Some of the dust in the wreckage contained asbestos, a fibrous material that is deadly when inhaled. Some began coughing the day of the disaster, and haven’t stopped since. Asbestos fibers are breathed in, attach themselves to the lining of the lungs and form mesothelioma, a cancer directly related only to asbestos exposure. Links between the toxic cloud of that day and the diseases and deaths occurring because of it may take decades to find, since most terminal diseases take that long to manifest.
Answers are needed sooner than that, according to workers. In recent months, reports have been filing in that workers from Ground Zero on 9/11 are dying from various ailments. Congress has spent more than $100 million for health programs for those workers at the instigation of New York lawmakers. The World Trade Center Health Registry has also been born, in order to keep tabs on all workers from 9/11. The program includes questionnaires and forms, time, and a lot of patience; no medical exams or screenings are included in the Registry.
