A man that is normally called in to safely remove dangerous asbestos was charged with violating his duty and exposing the public to the material. The case alleges that he dumped the toxin in a public parking lot.
A Philadelphia contractor was charged this week in a case involving asbestos and violation of the Clean Air Act. The man is charged with dumping hundreds of pounds of asbestos in a public parking lot, as opposed to disposing of it safely. The businessman employed a trailer while his firm, R. Cone Environmental Services, was contracted to remove dangerous asbestos and dispose of it; instead, the asbestos was stuffed into the trailer which was then parked in a Camden parking lot.
Licensed asbestos contractors must follow strict protocol set up by the Clean Air Act when both removing and disposing of asbestos. If mishandled, asbestos can break into airborne fibers, which can be inhaled into the lungs. This can result in many diseases, including asbestosis, emphysema and mesothelioma, a form of aggressive lung cancer. A licensed professional must carry out any work involving asbestos in order to keep the public safe from mesothelioma and other illnesses. If guilty, the man faces two years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000 for violating the Act
