Tile work being done on the floor of a Colorado post office led to the building being shut down this week. Dust in the building tested positive for asbestos after some of the flooring tiles were being cut up. A Boulder, Colorado post office had to shut down this week after a low level of asbestos was found in the sorting building. Work was being done to floor tiles in the old building, and dust created by the work began to settle in the room. The dust was tested and found positive for asbestos. No workers were exposed to the asbestos, as they had moved the sorting to a different part of the building while renovations were being done. An abatement crew was brought in, and the asbestos was safely cleaned and removed from the building. Asbestos dust can be very dangerous, since the particles can become airborne and can be breathed into the lungs. The fibers get caught in the lining there, and can result in many different types of respiratory illnesses including asbestosis, emphysema and mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer. Mesothelioma is directly linked with asbestos exposure, and is usually terminal at the terminal at the time of detection.
