A new law regarding asbestos removal was proposed to the NSW government at the end of last week. The new law would prevent anyone other than licensed professionals to remove asbestos.
As the law stands, small amounts of asbestos may be removed by any contractor working in NSW. The new legislation would prevent anyone other than a licensed professional to remove even the smallest amount of bonded asbestos from buildings. The current guidelines allow any contractor to remove up to 199 square meters of asbestos fiber from a building, with trained professionals being called in for any job larger than that.
The drafts, which were released today for public consultation, reduce the amount that may be worked with to 50 meters by September 1st and 10 meters by July of 2007. The end aim is to allow only certified professionals to handle any amount of asbestos removal, and is in response to shoddy asbestos handling in the last few months. Risk of asbestos exposure can be controlled, reducing the risk to all involved of asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer. The government is also working with the industry to offer more courses for asbestos safety.
