Courthouse workers in New Jersey will be allowed access to renovations plans in one building after learning of the presence of asbestos. The workers will go forward with reviewing the plans in order to make accommodations for continuing business during the construction.
Elevator repairs and other construction in process at the Middlesex County Courthouse resulted in a mass lawsuit by many of the employees in the building. Workers in the courthouse found out that asbestos is present in the 38-year old building, and that the repairs and renovations could dislodge the dangerous material, posing a health threat to anyone in the building. The employees sued for access to review and challenge construction plans, and were awarded the authority to do so this week.
Employees won an earlier ruling enabling them to vacate the building while asbestos abatement, or removal, is conducted. Officials wanted to keep the building open, but seal off the areas that were being worked on. If people are exposed to asbestos fibers, they can be breathed into the lungs and get lodged there. The fibers keep the lungs from absorbing oxygen, resulting in many forms of respiratory diseases, including mesthelioma. An aggressive form of cancer, mesothelioma is often times fatal at the time of detection.
