A new danger has been associated with the tunnel workers in the nation’s capital; mesothelioma, a deadly form of lung cancer resulting from repeated exposure to asbestos and its air born fibers.

US tunnel workers in Washington DC’s Capitol, the seat of the US Congress, say they risk a slow death from asbestos related diseases, the most deadly of them being mesothelioma. The asbestos fibers are a known carcinogen, and results in mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer that is attributed only to asbestos exposure. Other dangers of exposure include emphysema and asbestosis, all breathing and lung related medical problems resulting from repeated asbestos inhalation. The workers in the tunnels claim that they are thick with asbestos dust, as well as high heat and locked emergency exits.

A copy of a letter sent to legislators by 10 employees was reported to have been sent to the Office of Architect of the Capitol, which has a responsibility to maintain the complex. The tunnels connect the power plant to the House and Senate buildings are so dangerous, according to the workers, that the Capitol police do not patrol them, raising yet another safety risk. Mesothelioma can take years to manifest, and is usually deadly by the time of detection.
