Teachers at a New Jersey high school are asking for proof that asbestos was removed and that the buildings are safe before they return to work. Teachers were supplied with unreadable documents that showed nothing more that shipping records. Officials have declared that all hazardous asbestos has been removed from Jackson Memorial High School in New Jersey. But teachers and staff at the school want proof that the asbestos is gone before they return to the building. Documents were made public to verify the asbestos had been removed from the building, but teachers state that the documents are nothing more than a shipping receipt and testing documents from the company that performed air quality tests. The president of the abatement company, Environmental Design, Inc., said that the documentation that the teachers are demanding is never issued. The teachers are right to be concerned over the continued presence of asbestos, considering that the material can lead to many health problems including emphysema and mesothelioma. School officials are maintaining that the abatement was completed, and that there is no health risk in the building. Asbestos-related diseases, including mesothelioma, can take years to develop after asbestos fibers are breathed into the lungs. The diseases are usually untreatable at the time of detection, since symptoms take years to come to light.
