Libby Residents Want Buyout Due to Asbestos

Federal agencies are saying that the area of Libby, Montana is now safe for the residents of the area. But many of the locals are looking for the EPA or the asbestos company that contaminated the land to buy them out. When the Environmental Protection Agency cleaned up Libby, Montana in 2001, many of the residents there thought that their problems with asbestos were over. In 2005, it was found that the EPA could not assure the public that the abatement was complete. In late 2006, the EPA went back to Libby and finished the cleaning it had started five years before. After more reports came out from the EPA stating that they were not sure Libby would ever be safe to live in, residents made a new proposition; have the EPA or W. R. Grace buy out the “clean” property so they can move. Most of the residents of Libby are afflicted with some sort of asbestos-related illness. A vermiculite mine in the area, owned by W. R. Grace, spewed deadly asbestos particles into the area for more than half a century, causing asbestosis, emphysema and mesthelioma in many of the residents of the small town. Mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer caused by asbestos exposure, can take years to manifest, and is often times fatal at time of detection.
