Workers were banned from a civic center work site after asbestos was disturbed during renovations. Occupants were also kept from the building after high levels of asbestos were detected. A civic center in Oklahoma was quarantined this week after asbestos was released into the building during renovations. Workers and occupants were barred from the affected areas until abatement crews could make it safe for them to return. Contractors had been brought in during the renovations and disturbed asbestos in a few meeting rooms within the center; the asbestos dust traveled into two hallways, affecting those areas as well. Air tests have shown that some parts of the building are still safe, allowing planned activities to continue. By disturbing the asbestos, the material went from being stable to being deadly. When asbestos is disturbed, it breaks into particles that can be breathed in, adhering to the lining of the lungs. The result is a number of respiratory illnesses, including emphysema and mesothelioma, a type of deadly lung cancer. None of the workers were overtly exposed, but mesothelioma other asbestos-related diseases could take years to be diagnosed. It was known that asbestos was present in the building, but the intention was to leave it undisturbed.
