Workers of the tunnels under the Capitol are bringing more evidence to light over asbestos concerns on the site. The workers have revealed that they were exposed to asbestos when slabs of concrete fell in on the tunnels. In the ongoing battle with the Architect of the Capitol and workers of the tunnels under the Capitol, a new accusation has been leveled against the Architect. Workers now state that, on top of the asbestos that was known to be in the tunnels, falling slabs of old concrete further exposed them to the deadly material. Workers under the Architect of the Capitol maintain the tunnels, which supply steam to the Library of Congress, Congress, Supreme Court and other Federal buildings. The workers allege that they never knew they were working along side asbestos, nor were they provided safety gear in order to protect themselves. Some of the workers had been assigned to the tunnels for decades. Asbestos exposure, especially over long periods of time, can result in respiratory illnesses including asbestosis, emphysema and mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer. Some of the workers have begun to show signs of mesothelioma and asbestosis, while others have been diagnosed with emphysema. The Architect of the Capitol maintains that the presence of asbestos was disclosed and that workers were provided with safety gear while working in the tunnels.
