A contractor in Texas has been sentenced to prison time over the illegal dumping of asbestos. The man took asbestos-containing floor tiles from a demolition site and dumped them in an industrial area. A Dallas man was sentenced to 15 months in prison this week after he was found guilty of illegally dumping asbestos in a public area. Disposing of asbestos improperly violates the Clean Air Act, which gives specific guidelines for the handling and disposing of asbestos. The man was also convicted of making false statements to the Texas Waste Control Division over the disposal, and one count of mail fraud. The man was the manager of National Converting and Fulfillment, the company hired to clean up a demolition site in Dallas. By dumping the asbestos in a local industrial area, the manager put not only his workers put the public at risk of contracting a respiratory illness. Breathing in asbestos particles, resulting from mishandling the material, can lead to asbestosis, emphysema and mesothelioma, a form of aggressive lung cancer. Asbestos-related diseases, including the deadly mesothelioma, can take years to be diagnosed. The Clean Air Act dictates that asbestos must be sealed and disposed of in a delegated area used specifically for hazardous materials.
