A contractor lost his license to carry out abatement, or asbestos removal, in New Hampshire this week. The license was pulled over multiple violations the company had, including putting the public in danger. Being licensed to removed asbestos is a big deal, considering that there are few contractors that posses such a license. With the rights of the market for abatement come large responsibilities, including keeping the public safe. A contractor in New Hampshire found out that the responsibilities of an abatement contractor are many, and that any infraction can result in losing that license. ASTEC-Asbestos Technologies lost their license this week after multiple safety violations were found against the company, including putting the public at risk. When asbestos is removed incorrectly, the material breaks into airborne fibers. These fibers can be breathed into the lungs, becoming stuck and keeping the tissue from absorbing oxygen. The result is a slew of respiratory illnesses, including emphysema, asbestosis and mesothelioma, a form of deadly lung cancer. Mesothelioma can take years to manifest, and is often times terminal at the time of detection. By mishandling asbestos, the company put workers and the public at risk of respiratory diseases. The company will not be eligible to reclaim their license in the state of New Hampshire.
