While the devastation of cyclone Larry is beginning to be repaired, the danger has not yet passed. Those that are assisting with the clean up now fear asbestos in the affected areas after more of the material was found in rail stations.
Most of the relief efforts for cyclone Larry are focused in north Queensland, and the head of the reconstruction effort says that, now that the storm has passed there is another danger; asbestos exposure. Warnings have been issued from the Workplace Health and Safety Department about handling asbestos, a potentially deadly material that can be found in many of the Innisfail homes. Wearing gloves and face masks are recommended when handling the fiber, which can cause lung cancer and emphysema when disturbed and inhaled.
The state is aware that the area that was hard hit by Larry has a majority of its buildings containing asbestos, and has taken steps to protect workers and the public. Those that are working for the state to restore the area have been asked to participate in a safety class for handling the material, and people that live in the area have been warned that rubble may contain the deadly fibers.
