The Citadel Plaza in Missouri is once again under the gun as asbestos violations were handed this week. The violations allege that the contractors did not test homes for asbestos before demolishing them. Kansas City is going to have to scramble to get plans submitted this week regarding the Citadel Plaza construction. The Department of Natural Resources ordered the plan after it was found that the contractors and multiple state and city entities failed to test homes for asbestos prior to demolishing them. The site much now be cleaned and cleared before renovations and construction can continue. The concern now is how many people were exposed to asbestos, and in what levels. Asbestos exposure can lead to many forms of respiratory illnesses, including emphysema and mesothelioma, a form of deadly lung cancer. When asbestos is mishandled, the substance breaks into airborne particles, which can be inhaled and become stuck in the lungs. Asbestos-related diseases can take years to manifest, and mesothelioma can often times be fatal at the time of detection. The Plaza project has hundreds of workers on it, and is near residential areas, making the concern for health risks even more substantial
