Mid-Valley’s Health Hung by Asbestos

The dangers of asbestos and the health concerns accompanying it are well known. But the continued contact with asbestos, and the resulting health problems, have not yet waned.

Since the late 1980s, people have been made aware that contact with asbestos can be deadly. The material was banned in the late 1980s after a link between the hazardous fiber and mesothelioma were found, and those professionals that handle the material are carefully monitored. Even with the knowledge, though, material that was used prior to the ban still contain asbestos, including building insulation, piping material, ceiling linings and tiles. Asbestos is normally safe if it remains intact; exposure happens when the material is disturbed, and fibers are inhaled.

Inhaling asbestos fibers can cause the material to become lodged in the lungs, increasing the chances of three different types of lung cancer. The most well known type of lung cancer resulting from exposure is mesothelioma, a cancer of the lung lining, also called the mesothelial cells. The time between exposure and diagnosis can be months, or decades, often times making the cancer too advanced for treatment and the condition deadly. Florida alone received more than 1600 notifications of small abatement projects, a third more than normal in the 1990s, making the threat of mesothelioma, and other asbestos related disease, still a real concern.
