No one would associate Valley Forge with asbestos dumping, although the hazardous material was a concern for the park. The association will end soon, though, since state officials approved a cleanup plan for the historic site. The asbestos that was present at the Valley Forge National Historic Site was a legacy of history itself. Local industrial plants starting using more than 100 acres located near a parking site at the historic park as an asbestos dumping place starting in the 1800’s. State officials have finally approved an $11.6 million cleanup after decades of negotiations for the work. The work is due to start this year, and will involve removing and sealing contaminated soil then replacing it with clean soil and landscaping. Though the asbestos in the area was not considered a pressing health concern, asbestos can become dangerous if it is disturbed. By digging, landscaping or even driving, the asbestos could break into airborne particles, which can then be breathed in. Asbestos exposure can lead to a multitude of respiratory illnesses, including mesothelioma and emphysema. Mesothelioma, a form of deadly lung cancer, can take years to manifest and is often terminal at the time of detection.
