Australian rail workers have uncovered more of the deadly asbestos material in yet another train station, causing more worry and shutting down more stations.
More deadly asbestos is believed to have been found at yet another Sydney rail station by union workers making improvements to the buildings. The secretary of the RTBU union stated that workers had cordoned off a wall at the Redfern station, with total affected stations now number more than half a dozen. A portion of wall was exposed when tiles fell away during construction, revealing a sheet of what looked to be asbestos. The portion of the wall will be tested as soon as possible for the safety of the workers.
The discovery was not confirmed by RailCorp. Spokesmen, but is just the latest of concerns following the alarm of the discovery of disturbed asbestos at eight other stations during a safety audit. The deadly fibers have been detected in the air at Clyde, Regents Park, Camellia, Cheltenham, Edgecliff, Normanhurst, Thornleigh and Eastwood stations as part of the audit of CityRail properties. Five of the stations affected remain closed at this time. Another 65 sites were tested, and results are due back later this week.
