A Massachusetts school that was under review for accreditation encountered a setback when it was found that the school was laden with asbestos. The school is now waiting to see what their fate is. Athol High School was looking forward to getting their accreditation for the next school year. But at a meeting this week, it was found that reports from as far back as 2004 recorded asbestos in the school’s buildings. Now, more studies and reports have been ordered and the school will not be granted accreditation until the asbestos problem has been cleared. In the mean time, employees and students are wondering how long, and how much, asbestos they have been exposed to. Asbestos levels in the school were elevated, and problems with the asbestos had not been address properly, according to the 2004 report by the Environmental Protection Agency. Breathing in asbestos particles can lead to asbestosis, emphysema and a form of lung cancer called mesothelioma. Mesothelioma can lay dormant for years, and is often times fatal at the time of detection. EPA officials are weighing the amount of asbestos present before issuing a statement on the health concern to students and employees of the school.
