After years of debate and waiting, people with asbestos-related illnesses and the families of those who have passed away due to the illnesses have resolution. They were able to apply for financial assistance from the government.

Multiple sites for applying, including labor standards offices and non-profit entities nationwide, opened on Monday. The legislation was approved by the Diet on February 3rd. Previous medical bills will not be reimbursed, but funding will be available for current medical expenses and will pay about 100,000 yen in recuperation fees. Bereaved families of those victims that have already passes away will receive lump sums of 2.8 million yen and 200,000 yen for funeral costs, past or present.

An example of the medical expenses can be found in a 74 year old man with mesothelioma, who takes seven types of medicine as well as a once a week chemo treatments. The medical fees for his maintenance was staggering; now he has help. A sense of relief is overwhelming victims, who were a financial burden to their families. Now, the medical bills will be paid, and retribution will be dolled out when the victims are finally claimed by their disease.
