A Northland hotel was forced to close down after asbestos was found. Clarion Hotel is working with the Health Department after air-sampling taken during renovations turned up positive for asbestos.

The air tests were a standard application taken during renovations to the hotel after an anonymous tip was received. Workers at the hotel were discovered by authorities removing ceiling texture containing asbestos. The discovery was made more than 60 days into the renovations. All five floors of the hotel needed the textured ceiling removed, as well as the commons area and guest rooms. The possibility of exposing guests and workers to the air born asbestos is being investigated.

A permit was never obtained by hotel representatives for the renovation project. No controls or barriers were in place to keep hotel guests and workers from exposure. All areas were closed off and the project was shut down due to orders from the health inspectors. The Clarion at Plaza Drive shut down after independent tests showed that asbestos was in the air. Hotel representatives were meeting with the EPA to oversee the project; the hotel will remained closed until completion.
