Linear Park ’s renovations were postponed last week after the unexpected discovery of asbestos. The work that started in January has been put on hold indefinitely, and residents in the area are furious over the possible exposure.

The project was to create a park to link East India Way and the Blackhorse Lane tram stop, but has been put on hold due to the unexpected discovery of asbestos. Traces of the potentially deadly material were found on the site, making the locals uneasy. According to the neighborhood, no one was told there was asbestos in the area and children had been playing near the affected site for days. Piles of discarded material had been left on the site, with no notice that the piles that were backing up to their gardens on Dalmally Road had asbestos in them.

The only notice the residents received was when they woke up on Monday morning to men in Hazmat suits removing the piles of rubble. Low traces of asbestos in the cement removed were confirmed by the Cmydon Council. More than the scare of being exposed to asbestos, residents are angered that it was known the material was there, and no one was told for days.
