The discovery of an entire floor of asbestos insulation may add more than $1.7 million to the demolition costs for the Milwaukee County Courthouse Annex. The bill had already stood at $5.2 million.
In the first week of the project, the budget was pushed 33% over the allotted amount, stunning county officials. The officials had debated for more than a year about the budget and benefit of taking down the parking and office structure. The demolition was the top priority of the County Executive, and was only approved last fall by a reluctant County Board. The annex was used mainly for parking by employees. A deal was secured by the administration for $5.2 million which will be funded by the state, which preferred that the annex be demolished to make way for the Marquette Interchange freeway.
The large area of asbestos was overlooked by an engineering consulting firm hired to survey the site. Multiple inspections took place before the recent discovery, which is causing budget concerns for the state. More aid will be requested from the state, although demolition will not be postponed for a decision to be reached. The site is to be cleared by June.
