School Playground Host of Asbestos

British school has been found to have traces of asbestos on its playground. Parents are worried, and school may be on recess, permanently.

More than 5 kg of asbestos was found in the Bargo Public School playground, causing the attendants to order the area to be hosed down. The local parents association says that this means of handling the situation is unacceptable, and possibly hazardous to the students health. Around 150 schools have asbestos in their grounds or buildings, according to the State Government. Concerns were raised when, late last year, evidence of asbestos began to appear on the student drop off area and the teachers parking area.

More than 5 kg of asbestos was recovered by government officials in hazmat suits. The material was emu-picked from the area, as was the safety fencing that had marked the area as unsafe. No other action has been taken since the removal of the material. The Government’s School Asset Management Unit has recommended spraying the area continuously with water in order to keep the area from becoming hazardous, a move that has caused the school to ask exemption from the water restrictions in place in the area. Though the Education Minister said that Bargo, as well as the other schools containing asbestos, were under control, the Parents Association says the “watering” is a poor solution.
