More than 100 companies have been sued by the families of people that died as a result of asbestos related diseases. The victims of mesothelioma, emphysema and other diseases passed away before legislation could be brought to bear.
In the February 21st suit, conducted in a Birmingham federal court, the plaintiff lists include representatives of the more than 120 deceased people. The companies are accused of manufacturing, producing or designing asbestos containing products or machinery, and include A.O. Smith Electrical Products; Emerson Electrical Co.; Ingersoll Rand and Weyerhaeuser. Though specific dates are not provided for the deaths or when the asbestos exposure happened, the lawsuit does put forth the fact that the motion was brought within two years of the asbestos-related conditions. It also said that those who were exposed were unaware of the hazards or dangers.
The hazardous and deadly conditions were created by the defendants, while exposing the workers to large amounts of asbestos fibers. The companies that could be reached declined to comment on the litigation, and many of the defendants were unavailable. Asbestos can often be found in insulation and mechanical parts manufactured before 1980.
