A businessman in Virginia pleaded guilty to dumping material containing asbestos within city limits, and now faces a fine and footing the bill for the clean up.
Up to three years of probation was also included in the list, with the fine amounting to more than $9,000. Clean up of the site may cost more than twice the amount of the fine. Last October he pleaded guilty to removing the hazardous material, as well as other construction debris, from sites in four counties. His company, Betal Environmental of Paterson, is not licensed to handle the poisonous material. A trailer was found in 2004 with 33 bags of asbestos and other debris abandoned by the company on East 38th Street in Paterson, Virginia.
The sentencing was announced by the Attorney General’s Division of Criminal Justice’s Environmental Crimes Bureau on Thursday. The prosecution was the first under the 2005 Asbestos Control and Licensing Act, a legislation that aims at controlling the removal of asbestos. The hazardous material was located in a residential area that also caters to small businesses, making the possible danger to the public even worse.
