France Negotiates on Asbestos Ship

France’s ambassador has declared that the home country of the Clemenceau will remove all asbestos from the ship prior to docking in an Indian shipyard if that would facilitate the process of wreckage. The decommissioned warship is still waiting for it’s fate in the waters off New Delhi.

In a new move to expedite the wreckage of the Clemenceau, France has suggested that the warship be returned to France for the removal of all asbestos on board before going to a shipyard in Alang. If the Indian government and courts require the move, France will accept the decision without question. The decision of whether or not the ship can even enter Indian waters will be decided by February 13th. While France states that the ship contains only 45 tons of the hazardous material, the firm that commissioned the trip says the ship has more than 500 tons aboard.

The French ambassador admits that there is no alternate plan if India denies entry to the ship, but states forcing India to accept the ship is not even a consideration. He also volunteered the fact that French experts would be on hand at the ship yard if India did approve the wreckage of the Clemenceau by the Shree Ram yard in Alang. Equipment would be provided to assure the well being of the workers involved, and health officials would monitor the continuing health of those workers involved.
