People reporting to Jackson Memorial High School are concerned that renovations may expose them to asbestos. Repeated air quality tests show that the site is safe, but concern still lingers.
The renovations at Jackson Memorial High School in New Jersey have been going on for some time, and will continue for at least another year. Teachers and students are concerned that the work may expose them to asbestos, since pieces of the material have been found in the school buildings. Air tests have repeatedly shown that there is no danger, but conflicting stories have raised concern for people within the school. Asbestos was supposed to have been completely removed during the summer, when the school is vacant. But as late as October, pieces of the hazardous substance were still being found.
Students and teachers are right to be concerned if they are being exposed to asbestos, since exposure can lead to respiratory diseases. Breathing in asbestos fibers can cause asbestosis, emphysema and mesothelioma, a form of aggressive lung cancer. No students or workers have displayed symptoms of asbestos-related diseases, but emphysema and mesothelioma can take years to develop. School officials said they would continue to test the site, stopping renovations only if air tests showed high levels of asbestos.
