Cleaning up three homes that were demolished in a Pennsylvania neighborhood should have been an easy job. After asbestos was found in the rubble, however, the work halted and concern grew.
When a gas explosion destroyed three homes, and damaged four others, in a small Pennsylvania town, most people were relieved that no one was hurt. The houses could be rebuilt and repaired, and the city could move on. But when clean up crews went to the site, they discovered floor and ceiling tiles, piping insulation and siding throughout a large area as a result of the huge blast. The items contained asbestos, halting the cleaning, repairs and rebuilding while specialist determine if the area is safe.
Asbestos can be found in many old buildings, such as the houses affected by the gas explosion. Normally, asbestos is not dangerous and is a good form of insulation or fire retardant. The asbestos in the houses, however, was blown apart, causing the material to fragment. This results in the substance taking to the air, where it can be breathed into the lungs and remain there. The result is many forms of respiratory illnesses, including emphysema and mesothelioma. Asbestos-related diseases, including the lung cancer mesothelioma, can take years to diagnose.
