A contractor has exposed an Iowa school to asbestos after removing piping from the building. The man removed 30 feet of piping and carried it through the school without securing the material.

During a renovation project at an Iowa school, a general contractor removed piping that was insulated with asbestos without properly handling the deadly material. To make matters worse, the asbestos was carted through the school without being sealed. The contractor is to be fined $1,500 for the violation, which he plans on fighting, stating that he was informed that all asbestos had been removed prior to him beginning his repairs. The school maintains that asbestos was not discussed when the repairs were contracted with the company.

Asbestos can become a health concern if it is removed or disposed of improperly. Contractors need to be specially certified in order to work with the material, and the site must be watered down constantly to keep the asbestos from breaking apart and becoming airborne. If this happens, people are at risk of breathing the particles into their lungs, where the asbestos becomes stuck. Asbestos exposure can result in emphysema and mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer directly linked with the hazardous material.
